OUGD601: Current Social Issues: Tampon Tax

The Tampon Tax was a rule enforced by the E.U and something the UK have had since 1973, charging women on average hundreds of pounds within their life.  The tax in Canada was removed in mid-2015 and women protested in the United Kingdom later that year, with other countries later following suit.







Many sources say that photographs poste on Michelle Gandhi (Celebrity Blogger's) page, show the 26-year old clad in orange running tights darkened with blood. And just like that, a movement was born.

Many female creatives have decided to speak out about this issue through their artwork to raise social awareness.

Artist Freya-Marie chose to represent that tampons are a 'luxury good' by be-jewelling them to look like traditional ornamental objects, typical of British/Western upper class cultured artwork. The embellishments


Protests

The issue with the rise in tampon tax has led to protests within the UK and the United States- showcasing free bleeding as a sign of protest, alongside the physical demonstration.
