OUGD601: Planning the Project 01

What I plan to investigate
  • Investigate Vogue
  • Investigate times of political and social unrest
  • How are editorials & magazines constructed?
  • Is there preplanning in terms of content for future generations?
  • Are there hidden codes/signifieds common between all influential magazines?
    • How does the internet impact this? Will this still be the case in 2057, if not, what will change?
  • Will consumerism focus more on sustainability/ethics over couture and editorial styling which may include aspects of 'cruelty' (e.g: leather garments, fur, feathers, non-cruelty free makeup)
  • Will society scrap printed magazines or condense them?
  • Will photo format change? Has it already changed to the Insta square?
  • Will people pay more or less for clothes?
    • Will fast fashion overtake designer/handmade?
    • Will people pay more or less for magazines? (it depends...)
  • How will brands be pioneered?
  • How will brands be advertised in the future?
  • What was advertising in fashion magazines like?
    • Who was Conde Nast's secondary audience?
  • What intellectual references and concepts are most frequently used? (pastiche adaptations)
  • What were the views of the most influential fashion photographers on making a fashion image?
  • How does communication and story telling influence the factors of image construction?
  • Ethics within editorial design & fashion photography- is lying or exaggerating okay ethically?
  • If reality is so scary, why are people still fascinated by 'common culture' and documentary photography? Is it because that isn't their reality, so its easier to take an objective point of view?
  • Entertainment is a byproduct of the creators making amazing work.
____________

'Whats the point in a fashion magazine?"

A fashion magazine can be a social commentary on the world. It can be an artist taking a critical eye and personifying their ideas to a wider audience. They are used to showcase and make trends which ultimately filter down through high street department stores, social media and ultimately society. The concept of a magazines is to generate profit, yet a fashion image is to generate art. Advertisers can take this platform to target a more specific audience and showcase all forms of brands (predominantly luxury brands in magazines such as Vogue/ Harpers Bazaar). To those who do not live the kind of lifestyle where these products and ideologies are commonly accessible  fashion magazines can provide an escape from the mundane and generate aspects of utopia for the common man, providing education, inspiration, and possibly a social comment (or narrative) throughout modern time.

  • Online/social media heightens art online, there is now a more accessible way to see this work so makers will always be making regardless of having a platform.
  • Instagram is free advertising - brands in pop culture use this as a friendly/informal way to engage with their audiences. Contemporary/historic fashion brands and magazines use this as a soft way to engage the masses with fashion.
  • Historic brands plays a enormous role (brands which have stood the test of time and have been consistently raising the bar reign supreme)
  • Designer fashion brands & magazines need to reinvent to survive
  • Clothes as an identifier for identities (or characters).. be whoever you want to be (!!)
