OUGD601: Understanding Tastemakers of Today


Instagram famous people have the power to influence, and reach a wider audience more immediately than more conventional forms of traditional advertising. A billboard is in a fixed location, the internet is everywhere. Brands jump on these infuencers to become the face of their brand, providing free goods in exchange for them to promote. By having an Instagram post, an informal tone is conveyed as apposed to a forced 'look how good this product is' vibe. However, with the rise of sponsored posts it is becoming increasingly more obvious and forced from a viewers perspective so advertising has almost done a 360, going from relaxed and informal, to fake and untrusting in only a few posts.

Natural tastemakers in the fashion world differ per persons taste, however looking at this from a commercial point of view, models and bloggers are at the forefront of Instagram celebrity-hood.
